BLACKSBURG, VA – Virginia Tech, the No. 63 ranked team in the nation, won four of six singles matches in straight sets and pulled the other two out in third-set tiebreakers as the Hokies beat UNC Greensboro, 7-0, in women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
UNCG threatened to break the shutout at Nos. 1 and 6 singles. However, Yasmin Hamza held off Alejandra Guerra, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) at the first flight and Bethan James topped Courtney Akel at No. 6, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14-12) to preserve the shutout.
UNCG’s only win of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles when Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley teamed up to beat Hamza and Jessica Brouwer, 8-5. But the Hokies claimed the doubles point by winning the other two doubles matches.
UNCG returns to action on Thursday when it hosts High Point at 2 pm.
