Strong singles helps UNCG top Appalachian State, 5-2

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro won four singles matches in straight sets on its way to a 5-2 win over Appalachian State in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Friday afternoon.

Arielle VonStrolley, Erica Zabkar, Whitney Miles and Valerie Behr each picked up straight-set wins to lead the Spartans to the victory. Miles and VonStrolley earned their 10th victories of the spring campaign. Miles, a junior from Atlanta, GA, topped Lauren Holton, 6-3 and 7-6. Behr, a freshman from Wesel, Germany, topped Carolina Mauch, 6-0 and 6-3.

Zabkar’s win was the 21st of the season, including a 12-7 mark this spring, while VonStrolley won her 15th of the year. Zabkar topped Monica Tomas by identical 6-2 scores, while VonStrolley bested Anja Gugger, 6-1 and 6-3.

UNCG (9-10, 4-5) also won two of the three doubles pro-sets to complete the win.

The Spartans return to action Thursday when they travel to Charlotte for a 2:30 pm non-conference match.
