Pair of three-set wins lead UNCG past UNCW, 5-2

WILMINGTON, NC – UNC Greensboro won five of the six singles matches, including a pair of three-set thrillers to clinch a 5-2 win over in-state rival UNC Wilmington in women’s tennis action Tuesday night.

Erica Zabkar, Courtney Akel and Jess Eblen each won singles matches in straight sets. However, it was three-set wins by Arielle VonStrolley and Whitney Miles that put the win away.

VonStrolley defeated Molly Molony 6-3 in the opening set, but dropped the second to Molony, 6-2. VonStrolley, however, rallied to win the decisive third set, 7-5. In addition, Miles defeated Kayla Schwenk 6-4 in the opener, lost a second set tiebreaker, before topping Schwenk in the third, 6-4.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they visit Western Carolina for a Southern Conference match at 1 pm.
