CHATTANOOGA, TN – The lower portion on UNC Greensboro’s line-up won four singles matches to lead the Spartans to a 5-2 win over Chattanooga in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.
UNCG got a thrilling three-set win by Whitney Miles to go along with straight set wins by Courtney Akel and Valerie Behr. In addition, Jess Eblen won by injury default as the Spartans (5-3, 1-0) won their SoCon season opener.
Miles, a junior from Atlanta, GA, lost the opening set 6-3 before rallying to win the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, over Beata Knizat. The win raised her record to 5-3 on the spring and 8-10 overall for the year.
Akel held off a late charge by Bonnie Adams to win at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 7-6, while Behr handled Samantha Duggan, 6-2 and 6-4. In addition, the Spartans won two of three doubles pro-sets to claim the doubles point.
UNCG hosts Portland on Tuesday at 2:30.
