What they’re saying about Steve Nugent:

“Steve was an intricate part of my development as a soccer player and had a way of always making me excel in every area of my game. It was during my years of playing for him that I gained a greater knowledge of the game that set me up to play at the highest level. Steve is not just a coach, he is a great person and cares about the well-being of his players. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to play for him.”
- Nandi Pryce, former member of the U.S. National Team

“The hiring of Steve Nugent is an excellent move by the UNC Greensboro administration. Eddie [Radwanski] did a fantastic job there of building UNCG into one of the powers of the South. I think Steve was the right person to come in and be able to continue that program moving in the right direction.”
- Robbie Church, Duke head coach

“Steve is quite simply a tremendous coach. He has a great ability to create a positive student-athlete experience where players are both pushed and supported in their goals, individually and collectively. Steve’s players love playing for him, and with good reason.”
- Jon Lipsitz, Kentucky head coach

“Steve has an extensive background as both a club and college coach. He brings a rare perspective to the game and should be a successful recruiter immediately. His passion for the game will be contagious to his players. Coach Nugent cares about his players and genuinely wants them to be successful both on and off the field.”
- Mark Krikorian, Florida State head coach

Steve Nugent is in his first season as head women’s soccer coach at UNCG. He was named to the position on Feb. 1, 2011.

Nugent, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, is the third head coach in school history. He took over for longtime UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski, who left in December 2010 to become Clemson’s head coach.

With more than 21 years of coaching experience at various levels to his credit, Nugent is noted for his eye for talent and has helped three different teams to four NCAA tournament berths. He was also on staff for a pair of NAIA national title-winning teams. In addition, he’s had a hand in developing several full national team members from various countries.

“Steve Nugent brings a passion and work ethic to the Spartan soccer program which will complement our already strong foundation,” UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record said upon hiring Nugent. “He has learned from many great coaches and taught many players who have had significant college, professional and national team success.”

The Nugents: Steve, Janna, Trevor, Brady and Connor.

From 2007-10, Nugent helped Georgia to a combined 37-23-6 record and a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. An assistant coach working with the goalkeepers and defense, he also coordinated team travel and the budget. During Nugent’s tenure in Athens, Ga., the Bulldogs finished in the top 25 twice and spent several weeks in the rankings this season. He mentored former Georgia keeper Michelle Betos, who finished her career first in school history in wins and second in single-season saves. Georgia had 10 all-region selections in his tenure.

Prior to working at Georgia, Nugent spent the previous six years as the director of coaching for Team Boca in Boca Raton, Fla., and was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Girls Youth Competitive Division South Region Coach of the Year in 2005. Taking into account his 11-year tenure with Team Boca from 1989-2000, Nugent helped Team Boca to a combined 15 state championships in his two stints with the club. It was there that Nugent helped develop nine girls who would go on to be national team members for their respective countries.

Between stints with Team Boca, Nugent helped build Rice University’s first-ever program from 2001-02. An assistant for the Owls, Nugent helped Rice qualify for the Western Athletic Conference tournament in its first year of competition.

Prior to working at Rice, Nugent was a graduate assistant at Florida State in 2000 and 2001. There, he helped the Seminoles to their first-ever NCAA berth, a trip to the NCAA round of 16 and the school’s first postseason national ranking.

From 1994-97, Nugent was a volunteer assistant coach at Lynn University in Boca Raton. The Fighting Knights were highly successful during Nugent’s tenure, winning NAIA national titles in 1994 and 1995 and finishing as the NCAA Division II runner-up in 1996.

Nugent holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma with Distinction, a U.S. Soccer “B” License and a US Youth Soccer National Youth License. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic in 1996.

Nugent and his wife, Janna, have three young sons: Trevor, Brady and Connor.

Sandy Davison is in her first season as an assistant coach for the UNCG women's soccer team.

“Sandy has a tremendous coaching resume at the youth level in developing players to play at the highest level,” head coach Steve Nugent said upon Davison's hiring. “She was a great player herself. Sandy has very deep ties in Region III and Region IV, and from a recruiting perspective, that will be incredibly valuable to us. At the same time, she’s a tremendous field coach, can identify talent and will be an asset to us in every facet of running a top-level Division I women’s soccer program.”

Davison came to UNCG from the Sereno Soccer Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., where she was the girls’ divisional director since 2009 for the U-16 through U-18 age groups. While there, Davison coached a pair of teams ranked in the top 25 nationally, with a history of multiple state championships.

For much of the last decade, Davison worked US Soccer Youth and US Club Soccer National Team ID camps, and joined the US Soccer Scouting Network Staff in 2010. Davison was also a longtime US Youth Soccer ODP regional staff coach, a US Soccer U-14 Girls National ID Camp staff coach and an ODP state team coach in multiple state associations.

Davison also worked extensively with club teams in soccer-rich areas like Texas, Georgia, Florida and California. After several years with Challenge Soccer Club in Houston, Texas, Davison was recruited back to the program to assist with developing and growing the Challenge South Soccer Club, an offshoot in South Houston whose membership quintupled in one year under Davison’s guidance.

She also directed the girls’ portions of the newly formed Space City FC in Houston; the Weston Fury Soccer Club in Weston, Fla.; the Pleasanton Rage Soccer Club in Pleasanton, Calif.; and the Davis Youth Soccer Club in Davis, Calif.; and was a division director for the Tophat Soccer Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Throughout her career, Davison has developed and trained players who have gone on to play in the former WUSA and with youth national and regional teams. She has also had great success facilitating the college process for prospective student-athletes.

A licensed physical therapist assistant, Davison holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” Coaching License. She attended Sacramento State University from 1984-85 after spending two years at Pfieffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.

“I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to work with Steve Nugent given his success in the women’s game,” Davison said upon accepting the job. “It will be an exciting challenge to be a part of the continued success of UNCG women’s soccer and to work with Steve and the UNCG administration in pursuing the program’s vision.”

UNCG alumna Jamie Corti is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Spartans. Corti returns to UNCG after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth.

“When I was named the head coach, the first person that I called was Jamie,” UNCG head coach Steve Nugent said upon hiring Corti. “She was incredibly important to me, getting somebody here that knows the lay of the land, understands how to be successful in an environment like this, was a great player, has made the transition to be a very good coach, loves UNCG, loves the Greensboro area and at the same time, has a great story to tell about her experience collegiately. She relates extremely well to the players and is incredibly diligent in the office, and is a real shining star when it comes to young coaches. The most important quality that I think she possesses is that she’s a good person. It’s important that we surround ourselves with good people every day.”

A 2008 UNCG graduate, Corti was a two-time All-Southern Conference selection for the Spartans. The defender’s best season for UNCG came in 2007, when she was a third-team all-region selection by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Soccer Buzz.

Corti helped the Spartans to four SoCon regular-season titles, including one in her true freshman season, which she redshirted after an injury that limited her to just one match. She made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007, earning SoCon All-Tournament honors in 2006 as the Spartans won the league tournament.

The Spartans recorded 41 shutouts in her four healthy seasons in a UNCG uniform, an average of more than 10 per season.

With Corti on the coaching staff last season, VCU went 6-9-4 and had 10 of its 11 Colonial Athletic Association games decided by one goal or fewer. The Rams allowed two or fewer goals in 17 of their 19 contests.

During Corti’s tenure, VCU had three All-CAA selections and saw defender Myriam Bouchard take first-team all-region honors.

“I'm really excited to be back in Greensboro and to be part of a program that has meant a lot to me,” Corti said. “I’m looking forward to working with Steve Nugent and picking up where the program left off.”

Corti graduated from UNCG with a degree in elementary education and earned her master’s degree from VCU in education with a concentration in sport leadership.

Bill Steffen

Bill Steffen

Title: Volunteer Assistant Coach

Bill Steffen enters his third season as an assistant at UNCG in 2010. Steffen works primarily with the goalkeepers.

In his two years on the staff, Steffen has seen keeper Kelsey Kearney twice earn All-Southern Conference honors. She was a first-team selection as a freshman in 2008, when she set a school record with a 0.48 goals against average. Kearney followed that up with a 0.80 mark in 2009, the third-best GAA in school history, and took second-team All-SoCon honors. In just two seasons, Kearney has posted 19 shutouts, the fourth-best career mark in school history.

Steffen brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Spartans and is no stranger to the UNCG soccer programs, having served as an assistant coach for UNCG's men's squad for one year. Steffen also served as an assistant on the North Carolina men's side for one year and women's side for three years before taking off for the University of Oregon from 1996-2005 to serve as head coach.

A national staff coach for the past 14 years, Steffen has also been a member of the NSCAA goalkeeping staff and also served as the NSCAA Division I Women's Soccer representative for three years while also serving as the West Regional Ranking Chair for four years. Steffen brings professional playing experience to the Spartans as well, having played five years for the Albany Capitals of the ASL and APSL.

Steffen, who is currently working toward completion of his doctorate in sport and exercise psychology, also had coaching stints at Lyndon State College, University at Albany, Greensboro College, Furman and Duke. He served as an assistant at each school with the exception of Greensboro, where he held the head coaching position for two seasons.
