Rodriguez Collects First Southern Conference Player of the Week Award
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG freshman forward Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Father Ryan) has been named the Southern Conference women's soccer Player of the Week for matches Oct. 19-21 after scoring three goals and the game winner against Samford last weekend, the league office announced Tuesday.
"This is a very deserving award for Katherine," head coach Steve Nugent said. "She has worked through the challenges of her first year of college soccer well and is playing at a very high level right now. Our team is very excited for her and this can only vault her to new heights as we move forward into the conference tournament."
Rodriguez picked up her second-straight game-winning goal in the 41st minute against Samford to propel the Spartans into first place over the weekend. Off a corner kick, Rodriguez headed home the goal from inside the box and has scored four goals in conference play.
The Franklin, Tenn. native joins fellow classmates Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) and Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) as winners of the SoCon women's soccer player of the week honor. Rodriguez secured her first career two-goal effort in a 4-0 victory against Chattanooga on Sunday.
The Spartans return to action for their final SoCon regular season game against in-state rival Elon Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field.
