GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team makes the short trip to face in-state rival Elon Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field. With a victory, the Spartans would claim their ninth Southern Conference regular season championship and top seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament.
UNCG (11-6-1, 8-1-1 SoCon) is riding a 20-game road SoCon unbeaten streak dating back to a 2-1 loss at Davidson in 2010. The Spartans picked up two more victories last week, including a key 1-0 victory against Samford to halt the Bulldogs' 22-game unbeaten streak in the SoCon. UNCG posted a convincing 4-0 win against Chattanooga Sunday after freshman Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Father Ryan) had her first two-goal effort and fourth goal in her last three games.
Freshman Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) leads the team with five goals, while senior Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa,Calif./Santa Rosa JC) paces the team with 13 points on four goals and five assists. Junior Nitang Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) finished the weekend with two assists and placed a perfect corner kick to earn the game-winning assist against Samford.
Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook HS) continues to lead the way in goal for the Spartans, posting her fifth-straight shutout and seventh overall. Simmons has 91 saves, which is tied for fifth all-time in a single season, and her 1.15 goals against average sits tied for 11th.
UNCG leads the all-time series against Elon with a 16-1 record after falling last season 1-0 in Greensboro. The Spartans had previously been undefeated against the Phoenix until last year's loss.
The Phoenix are still in the running for the No. 5 seed in the SoCon tournament after defeating Chattanooga, 5-0, and falling 2-1 to Samford last weekend. Elon is currently in fifth place. The Phoenix is led by Simi Dhaliwal who has three goals and one assist, while Katie Murphy has 92 saves and five shutouts in net.
