Senior Night Highlights Home Women's Soccer Weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Highlighted by senior night ceremonies on Friday, the UNCG women's soccer team plays host to a pair of SoCon contests this weekend, facing Davidson Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans then take on Georgia Southern Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
UNCG (7-6-1, 4-1-1 SoCon) is currently tied for second in the SoCon standings with Appalachian State just one point behind the leader Samford (4-0-2). The Spartans continued their solid play on the road earning a 1-1 draw against Furman and a 1-0 victory against Wofford last weekend to run their SoCon road unbeaten streak to 18 games.
Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook HS) was named the Southern Conference women's soccer Player of the Week after making 18 saves over the weekend, the league office announced Tuesday. Simmons tied a school record set by Kathryn Clewly in 2001 with 15 saves against Furman. Simmons turned away a penalty kick in double overtime to keep the game tied at 1-1 and stopped six shots alone on reigning SoCon Player of the Month Stephanie DeVita.
Senior Lauren Hein (Torrance, Calif./South Torrance) scored the eventual game-winning goal in a 1-0 win against Wofford last weekend and classmate Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa,Calif./Santa Rosa JC) added the game-tying goal against Furman off a corner kick.
Friday's game versus the Wildcats will be senior night for six UNCG women's soccer players; Stephanie Partenheimer (Apex, N.C./Apex), Karin Sendel (Kiryat Tivon, Israel/Ort Kiryat Bialik), Tinna Bergthorsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn Vid Sund), Jessi Gulledge (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale), Barnekow and Hein. These six seniors have led the Spartans to two SoCon regular season titles, a SoCon Tournament title, an NCAA Tournament appearance and 47 total victories over the last four seasons.
UNCG leads the series against Davidson with a 21-5-2 record, winning two-straight matches since 2010. The Spartans are 13-3 against Georgia Southern after defeating the Eagles 2-1 in Statesboro last season to extend their nine-game winning streak.
Davidson enters the weekend with a 6-6-2 record and a 4-2 mark in the SoCon after wins against The Citadel and College of Charleston last weekend. Davidson is led by Julia Singley who has four goals and three assists for 11 points.
Georgia Southern is 6-4-4 on the season and 2-3-1 in the SoCon with wins against Chattanooga and Western Carolina. The Eagles are led by Sydnie Van Curen, who has five goals and one assist off the bench this season, while goalkeeper Katie Merson owns a stellar 0.94 goals against average with six shutouts.
