Women's Soccer Set for Home SoCon Weekend against College of Charleston and The Citadel
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team remains at home for a pair of Southern Conference matches this weekend, facing College of Charleston Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans then battle The Citadel Sunday at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans (4-6, 1-1 SoCon) opened conference play Friday with a thrilling 3-2 victory in double overtime against Appalachian State, while dropping a tough 1-0 contest to Western Carolina last Sunday. UNCG continued its recent dominance on the road in conference play, winning their 16th-straight game and remained undefeated in SoCon openers since joining the league in 1997.
Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) made 10 saves over the weekend, including seven against the Mountaineers. Simmons owns a SoCon-leading 56 saves in ten games and has posted two shutouts.
Midfielder Tinna Bergthorsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn Vid Sund) scored her first career goal in double overtime to help UNCG stun Appalachian State. Freshman Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) converted the tying goal with just four minutes left in regulation for her first goal of the season.
UNCG leads the series against the College of Charleston 14-3-1, winning the last six meetings with the Cougars. The Spartans are also undefeated against The Citadel at 11-0-0 after winning 4-2 last year in Charleston, S.C.
The Cougars opened up Southern Conference action 2-0 with a pair of 1-0 victories against Wofford and Furman last weekend at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C. The College of Charleston is led by Sarah Cardamone who has two goals and four assists in nine games this year.
The Bulldogs have won two of their last three games, including a 3-1 victory against Wofford last weekend to finish 1-1 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel lost to Furman, 3-0, to open SoCon play and will travel to Elon Friday for a 7 p.m. game. The Bulldogs are led by Mariana Garcia who has six goals in nine games this season.
UNCG will provide live stats and live video all weekend, starting with the game against College of Charleston Friday at 7 p.m.
