White Collects First Southern Conference Player of the Week Honor

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG freshman midfielder Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) has been named the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for games Aug. 24-27 after scoring two goals over the weekend, the league office announced Tuesday.

"We are thrilled that the Southern Conference has recognized the efforts of our team for the second week in a row," said head coach Steve Nugent. "Chesney's performance against both Wake Forest and UNC Asheville was very impressive. Chesney has taken much pride in her preparation for her first college season and it is paying dividends both on the field and for our team."

White scored the game-winning goal against then No. 7 Wake Forest last Friday after senior Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) made a terrific cross to find White who headed home the goal.  It was White's first collegiate tally and helped UNCG defeat its highest ranked opponent in program history.

"It is an honor to be named SoCon Player of the Week," said White.  "This is great recognition for our team to have a player win the award two weeks in a row. I am really proud of our team and we hope to come out next weekend to prove our result was no fluke."

The Franklin, Tenn. native added her second goal of the weekend against UNC Asheville after receiving a cross from classmate Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) off a header. White is tied for the team lead with two goals on the season.

The Spartans travel to Lexington, Ky. this weekend to take part in the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational against Kentucky Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Louisville Sunday at noon.
