Former Spartan Jamie Corti returns to UNCG as assistant coach
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's soccer alumna Jamie Corti has joined the Spartans' staff as an assistant coach, head coach Steve Nugent announced Tuesday. Corti returns to UNCG after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth.
"When I was named the head coach, the first person that I called was Jamie," Nugent said. "She was incredibly important to me, getting somebody here that knows the lay of the land, understands how to be successful in an environment like this, was a great player, has made the transition to be a very good coach, loves UNCG, loves the Greensboro area and at the same time, has a great story to tell about her experience collegiately. She relates extremely well to the players and is incredibly diligent in the office and is a real shining star when it comes to young coaches. The most important quality that I think she possesses is that she's a good person. It's important that we surround ourselves with good people every day."
A 2008 UNCG graduate, Corti was a two-time All-Southern Conference selection for the Spartans. The defender's best season for UNCG came in 2007, when she was a third-team all-region selection by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Soccer Buzz.
Corti helped the Spartans to four SoCon regular-season titles, including one in her true freshman season, which she redshirted after an injury that limited her to just one match. She made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007, earning SoCon All-Tournament honors in 2006 as the Spartans won the league tournament.
The Spartans recorded 41 shutouts in her four healthy seasons in a UNCG uniform, an average of more than 10 per season.
With Corti on the coaching staff last season, VCU went 6-9-4 and had 10 of its 11 Colonial Athletic Association games decided by one goal or fewer. The Rams allowed two or fewer goals in 17 of their 19 contests.
During Corti's tenure, VCU had three All-CAA selections and saw defender Myriam Bouchard take first-team all-region honors.
"I'm really excited to be back in Greensboro and to be part of a program that has meant a lot to me," Corti said. "I'm looking forward to working with Steve Nugent and picking up where the program left off."
Corti graduated from UNCG with a degree in elementary education and earned her master's degree from VCU in education with a concentration in sport leadership.
Corti will assume her responsibilities immediately.
