Hein named Southern Conference Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro freshman Lauren Hein was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for games Sept. 15-21, the league office announced Tuesday.
Hein scored two goals and added an assist for five points in a 4-0 win over High Point on Thursday.
The Torrance, Calif., native notched her first career goal in the 49th minute, heading home a cross from Kristin Player to make the score 2-0.
Hein added her second goal in the 55th minute, sending a beautiful strike into the upper left corner from 35 yards out.
Her two goals came on her first two collegiate shots.
The rookie had a chance at a hat trick late in the game, finding herself with the ball in front of the Panthers' net yet again. This time, she drew the keeper out and dished the ball off to Nicole Danford, who scored the empty-netter, earning Hein the assist.
With the five points, Hein jumped into second on the squad in scoring on the season.
The Spartans (4-4) open Southern Conference play on Friday when they host Furman at 7 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG, which has gone 29-0-2 in SoCon regular-season play the last three seasons, will put its 31-match, SoCon regular-season unbeaten streak on the line when it takes on the Paladins. Coincidentally, Furman was the last team to beat UNCG in league regular-season play, in 2005.
