NEW YORK, NY – UNC Greensboro soccer players Katelynn Donovan and Lauren Lopez earned spots on Soccer Buzz's All-Southeast Region Third Team, the Internet magazine announced Wednesday.
For Donovan, Wednesday's announcement marked her third postseason award. In addition to her all-region selection by Soccer Buzz, the Melville, NY, midfielder was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year and earned a spot on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association's all-state team. Donovan scored a UNCG-best 28 points on the season, leading the Spartans with 12 goals and adding four assists. The senior notched five game-winning goals – with game-winners in three straight contests – and was named the SoCon Player of the Month for October. She finished third in the SoCon in goals, goals per game (0.52), points and points per game (1.22).
Lopez was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection this season, and was part of a defense that allowed just 19 goals and posted 12 shutouts on the year in 23 games. The junior from Concord, NC, was named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team after helping the Spartans advance to the title match of the tournament, and notched 11 points on the season on three goals and five assists. Two of her goals were game-winners, coming in consecutive league games late in the season.
Donovan and Lopez helped lead the Spartans to a 16-4-3 overall mark and a 10-0-1 record in Southern Conference play, good for UNCG's third straight unbeaten SoCon season and third consecutive regular-season league title. The Spartans ended the season on a 14-game unbeaten streak, going 11-0-3 to finish the 2008 campaign, and held a final ranking of No. 10 in Soccer Buzz's Southeast Region rankings.
