SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney was named the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday in voting conducted by the league's sports information personnel.
Kearney, a product of Durham Academy and native of Durham, NC, recorded a pair of shutouts as UNCG took over first place in the SoCon women's soccer standings. Kearney, which won player of the week honors for the second time this season having won back on September 16, extended her shutout streak to 542 minutes as UNCG recorded its fourth and fifth consecutive shutouts. The school record for consecutive shutouts by the team is six, set in 1989.
Kearney had two saves in UNCG's 2-0 win over Western Carolina on Friday night at home, which gave UNCG first place in the conference, and then recorded five stops in Sunday's 2-0 win at Appalachian State. She currently ranks No. 22 in the nation in goals against average at 0.57 and No. 16 in the country in save percentage at .875. She has 42 saves in 11 matches this season.
The Spartans (10-4-1, 5-0-1), unbeaten in their last 26 SoCon regular season matches, return to action on Friday when they face Wofford at 6 pm.
