SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro's Katelynn Donovan scored the game's only goal and the Spartans tied a school record with their sixth straight shutout as UNCG topped Wofford, 1-0, in Southern Conference women's soccer action Friday evening.
Donovan, a senior from Melville, N.Y., scored her ninth goal of the season and fourth in the last three matches at 51:01. Mary Kate Towne gained the ball along the end line and then played the ball back to Donovan at the six-yard box, from where she knocked it home for the only goal of the night.
UNCG (11-4-1, 6-0-1 SoCon) freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney logged two saves to run her shutout streak to 632 consecutive minutes and pick up the win. She hasn't allowed a goal since the closing minutes of a 3-0 loss at Wake Forest back on September 17 – four weeks earlier. Wofford (2-8-5, 1-4-2) got four saves from Katie McChesney to keep the Terriers in it throughout the night. Wofford outshot the Spartans, 9-7, for the game.
The sixth consecutive shutout ties a school record for UNCG, equaling the standard set in 1989 when the program played at the Division II level. UNCG has also shutout Wofford in the last 11 meetings between the two and holds a 14-0 advantage in the all-time series.
The Spartans are also now unbeaten in their last 27 Southern Conference regular-season matches going back to Oct. 30, 2005. Their last loss came against Furman in overtime, 4-3, on that date. Furman is UNCG's next opponent on Sunday. Game time is set for 2 pm.
