UNCG records fifth straight shutout, tops Appalachian State, 2-0
BOONE, N.C. – UNC Greensboro recorded its fifth straight shutout and extended its Southern Conference unbeaten to streak to 26 straight in the regular season with a 2-0 win at Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon.
It is the third time in the program's 20-year history that the Spartans have recorded five or more consecutive shutouts. The school record is six straight set back in 1989 when the program was at the Division II level.
Kelsey Kearney, a freshman from Durham, N.C., recorded the shutout again on Sunday, extending her personal shutout streak to 542:27. She lowered her goals against average to 0.57 with her sixth shutout this season. She last allowed a goal back on Sept. 19 at Wake Forest. With five saves on Sunday, she also raised her save percentage to .875 this season.
Katelynn Donovan, the hero of Friday night's win over Western Carolina with a pair of goals, got the scoring started again on Sunday. Donovan, a senior from Melville, NY, scored her eighth goal of the season 13:27 into the match. After a feed by Kelly Attayek, Donovan beat the defender and hit a shot into the lower right corner of the game for a 1-0 UNCG advantage.
The Spartans made it 2-0 just before the intermission. Lauren Lopez crossed the ball to the far post, where Heather Mitrisin was able to get a head on it and knock it home for her first tally of the season.
Appalachian State (5-6-2, 1-4-1) outshot the Spartans, 12-10, but Kearney turned them away for the shutout to give the Spartans their 10th win of the season. The 10-4-1 record (5-0-1 in league play) marks the fifth straight season and the 18th time in the program's 20 years that UNCG has won 10 or more matches in a season.
UNCG returns to action on Friday when it visits Wofford for a 6 pm match.
