Spartan women's soccer players enjoying successful summer club season
GREENSBORO, NC – Several UNC Greensboro women’s soccer players will be playing in national championship caliber tournaments in the upcoming weeks of the summer.
The 87 CASL Spartan Elite team advanced to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Frisco, TX later this month. The team features three current Spartans in forward Kelly Attayek, midfielder Jennifer Bronson and defender Lauren Lopez.
During the Region III tournament, Attayek was outstanding, finishing with six goals to lead all scorers in the U-19 division. She scored twice in CASL’s opening day 4-0 win over Tulsa SC from Oklahoma. The following day, CASL played FTSC Oklahoma to a scoreless tie. However, on the third day of pool play, CASL knocked off the defending national champions Dallas Texans, 2-0, with Attayek scoring one of the two goals.
Attayek scored the only goal of the match in the semifinal win, a 1-0 triumph over the Concord Elite Fire from Georgia. In the finals, Attayek tallied two more times as CASL rolled to a 6-0 win over the Memphis (TN) Mercury.
CASL will take part in a 12-team tournament for the USYSA National Championship beginning July 25.
In addition, the Triad United team will be competing in the U.S. National Amateur Cup August 3, 4 and 5 in Seattle, WA. The team features current Spartans Katherine Ryan, Heather Mitrisin, Heather Deutschle, Jessica Patterson and Jamie Corti along with alumnus Amy Carnell. They will take on St. Louis SC in the semifinal round.
Triad United won its regional championship by allowing just one goal in three matches. They defeated McAlisters of South Carolina, 4-0, the Houston Challengers, 2-0 and Asheville FC, 2-1.
