Shannon Donovan placed on Soccer Buzz Team of the Week

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro senior defender Shannon Donovan has been named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week for her contributions that helped the Spartans take the Southern Conference Tournament title and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The native of Melville, NY, was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year earlier last week and also earned the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player award this weekend as UNCG took home the conference tournament crown for the sixth time in the program’s history.

Donovan recorded an assist on a goal scored by Deven Beachum in UNCG’s 4-0 first round win over Elon on Thursday, October 31. In Sunday’s championship match, Donovan notched five points to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 victory over Furman. She scored UNCG’s first goal in the first six minutes of play and then, six minutes later, scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick. Donovan also handed out an assist in the match.

Donovan leads the Spartans in scoring with 23 total points on seven goals and nine assists. Her nine assists are tied for best on the team and her seven goals are tied for second on the squad. Her leadership on the field helped the Spartans finish conference play with a 9-0-1 record, giving them their fifth SoCon regular season championship.

The Spartans take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Clemson, SC, on Friday. Game set for 5 pm.
