GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro swept all three conference postseason awards and had six players earn All-Southern Conference honors. Senior Shannon Donovan was awarded SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Year, Jen Bronson was named Co-Freshman of the Year and coach Eddie Radwanski took Coach of the Year honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
UNCG placed four players on the first team and two on the second team. Forward Deven Beachum and midfielders Karla Davis and Jessica Patterson join Donovan on the first team. Freshman forward Kelly Attayek and junior goalkeeper Katherine Ryan received second-team honors.
Radwanski led the Spartans to a 9-0-1 record in conference play, a first place finish in the SoCon and a 10-7-2 overall record in his sixth year at the helm for the Spartans. This is UNCG’s third regular season title under Radwanski and his first Coach of the Year honor.
Donovan, a senior defender from Melville, NY, started 14 matches for league-leading Spartans and led the team in scoring with 17 points on five goals and seven assists this season. Four of her five goals came in conference play, including one game-winner and one penalty kick. Donovan also fronted a defense that finished with six shutouts on the year. She was named SoCon Player of the Week for her two goal, two assist performance on Oct. 17. This is Donovan’s third straight first-team honor and in 2003, Donovan was honored as SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Bronson, a freshman from Raleigh, NC, started all 19 matches for UNCG and contributed in the Spartans solid midfield this season. She recorded 11 points on four goals and three assists. Bronson scored her first collegiate goal in the Spartans’ 1-0 win over Mercer and tallied two goals in the 6-0 win over The Citadel on Friday.
Beachum, a native of Raleigh, NC, was selected to the first team for the first time in her career. The senior tallied six goals and three assists for 15 points, placing her tied for second on the team. Beachum was also a 2004 and 2005 second-team All-Conference selection.
Davis, a junior from Monroe, NC, was second in the league in total assists with eight on the year. She wrapped up the season with 12 points on two goals and eight assists, including one conference game-winning goal. Davis was named SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2004. Patterson, a junior from Jacksonville, NC, tallied two goals for the Spartans this season and was named to the 2006 SoCon Preseaon All-Conference team.
Attayek, a freshman from Raleigh, NC and Ryan, a junior from Pittsboro, NC were awarded second team honors. Attayek finished tied for second on the team with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Ryan started all 19 games and recorded six shutouts for UNCG. She finished second in the conference with a .818 save percentage and tallied 81 saves for the Spartans.
Davidson’s Suzanne Sittko was also named Co-Freshman of the year. Sittko notched 17 points on the year and finished tied for fourth in the conference in total points.
UNCG takes on the No. 8 seeded Elon Phoenix on Tuesday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium for the opening round of the 2006 SoCon Tournament. Game time set for 7 pm.
