BOONE, NC – UNC Greensboro defeated Appalachian State 2-0 to remain unbeaten in Southern Conference action on Thursday afternoon.
UNCG is now 6-7-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Southern Conference while Appalachian State drops to 7-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the SoCon. The Spartans sit on top of the SoCon standings with 16 points overall.
Deven Beachum quickly put the Spartans on the board in the 13th minute of the match. Jennifer Bronson sent a cross to sophomore Heather Mitrisin. Beachum, the senior captain, connected on the pass from Mitrisin and sent a low blast to the left corner of the net past Mountaineer keeper Emma White. Beachum’s fourth goal of the year gave UNCG the one goal advantage. The Spartans fired 11 shots in the first half and held the Mountaineers to just three going into the break.
The second half saw the two teams combine for a total of 19 shots but neither team was able to connect until freshman Kelly Attayek tallied the game’s final goal in the last minutes of play for UNCG. Attayek took a feed from senior Shannon Donovan and defeated White in a one on one situation to score her fourth goal of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Katherine Ryan recorded seven saves for the Spartans, six of which were in the second half. UNCG finished the match with a 19-14 shot advantage.
The Spartans have two more home games remaining in the regular season. They host Davidson on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm and Furman comes to town on Saturday, October 15th. Game time set for 7 pm.
