UNCG and Indiana battle to a 1-1 draw
GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro Spartans and the Indiana Hoosiers battled to a 1-1 tie at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers (3-2-3) took the 1-0 lead with six seconds left in the first half when freshman Liz Holby netted her first goal of the season. Holby connected on a feed from Megan Pipkins and shot the ball 10 yards out to the back of the net for the one goal advantage.
UNCG junior midfielder Karla Davis scored the equalizer for the Spartans in the 67th minute of play. Senior Jessie Jay passed the ball to freshman Kelly Attayek who dribbled the ball to the bottom right hand corner of the 18 yard box and crossed the ball right to Davis who shot it past Hoosier keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer for her first goal of the season. For Attayek, it was her second assist on the season.
Indiana kept the ball on UNCG’s side of the pitch in the final two minutes but the Spartan defense held strong. The two teams finished regulation in a 1-1 draw.
In the first overtime session, UNCG goalkeeper Katherine Ryan stopped the only two shots taken by the Hoosiers, allowing the game to go into the second overtime period. The Spartans fired a pair of shots in the second overtime but were unable to produce the game-winner. Indiana held a 17-11 shot advantage as well as a 10-2 lead in corner kicks for the match.
In goal, Ryan recorded five saves for UNCG and Van Boxmeer collected five as well for Indiana.
“It was a good game. I was proud of how we competed,” head coach Eddie Radwanski stated. “It was a lack of concentration on our part at the end of the first. But we were on top of our game in the second half. Indiana is a solid team and I’m proud of how we finished.”
UNCG (1-7-1) begins Southern Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Elon. Kickoff set for 7 pm.
