UNCG falls to Duke 4-1 in women's soccer exhibition

GREENSBORO, NC – Duke’s Rebecca Moros scored two goals to guide the nationally ranked Blue Devils to a 4-1 victory over UNC Greensboro in a exhibition women’s soccer game on Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Duke’s Lorraine Quinn began the scoring for the Blue Devils off a feed from Christie McDonald at 6:35. Then at the 19:30 mark, Quinn dished the ball out to Moros who knocked the ball in past junior Karla Davis from 15 yards out into the left corner to make it 2-0.

Duke would go into halftime up 3-0 after Moros scored an unassisted goal in the 34th minute.

McDonald would score the Blue Devils final goal in the 55th minute with an unassisted tally from 18 yards out.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard late. After two point blank shots, sophomore Amanda Olson finally connected on her third attempt to make it 4-1 in favor of the Blue Devils. Olson was playing in her first game at UNCG after transferring from Virginia Commonwealth.

Duke outshot UNCG 14-12, but the Spartans held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Eighteen Spartans and 22 Blue Devils saw playing time in the match.

In a surprising move, Davis, who usually plays midfield, got the nod to start as goalkeeper for UNCG. Davis made three saves in 26:30 and Katherine Ryan stopped four shots in 63:30.

Duke is No. 12 in both the SoccerBuzz Pre-season Top 30 and NSCAA’s Preseason Poll. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 13 in Soccer America’s Pre-season Top 25 as well.

UNCG opens up regular season play on Friday, August 25 at William & Mary at 7pm in Williamsburg, VA. Duke will host St. Louis the same day in its season opener.
