GREENSBORO, NC – Senior keeper Jennifer Stillman recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the school-record 22nd of her career as UNC Greensboro ousted Appalachian State 4-0 Wednesday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
With the shutout, Stillman surpassed Kathryn Clewley, who posted 21 shutouts from 1998-2001.
The Spartans (6-4-0, 2-1-0) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as UNCG grabbed the early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest. Following a Mountaineer (7-2-0, 1-1-0) foul on the Spartan’s end of the field, Shannon Donovan sent a service into the box where Mary Kate Towne deposited it with a header past ASU keeper Megan Amorosi.
UNCG struck again in the 16th minute when Cara Hammond scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a rebound inside the Mountaineer box. Sophomore Karla Davis fired a shot on goal from 25 yards out that Amorosi made a lunging save on to keep the ball out of the ASU net. Unable to corral the ball, however, Hammond promptly snuck the ball past her for the Spartans’ second goal.
Nicollette DeLaine tallied the Spartans’ third goal of the half in the 20th minute as the senior collected her second goal of the season. The Raleigh, NC, native dribbled down the right side of the field and sent a shot that beat Amorosi on the left side, resulting in a keeper change for the visiting Mountaineers. The Spartans outshot ASU 14-3 in the first half.
After controlling much of the play in the second stanza, Dacia Beachum capped off UNCG’s scoring with a goal in the 77th minute. Beachum picked up her third goal of the season on a shot from five yards out. The recipient of a cross from her sister Deven, Dacia Beachum put a one touch shot into the left corner of the Mountaineers’ net to give UNCG a 4-0 advantage. Senior Amy Carnell also picked up an assist on the play. UNCG outshot the Mountaineers 22-5 in the contest.
“It was a well played game where we showed good intensity and acted with some urgency which is good to see,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “Appalachian State is a good team, one of the best App teams I have seen in a while. We played well tonight and put the ball in the net and that was the big difference.”
UNCG returns to the field Sunday afternoon when the Spartans entertain Elon at 2 pm while Appalachian State heads to Orangeburg, SC for a Sept. 30 meeting with South Carolina State.
