UNCG moves up in women’s soccer regional polls

GREENSBORO, NC – In a week that saw the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team post a 1-1 mark against two ACC opponents, the 4-3 Spartans have moved up in both major regional polls.

Checking in last week ranked number nine in the Southeast region of the Soccer Buzz National Poll, the Spartans rose one spot this week to claim the eighth spot in the rankings.  Jumping two spots in the NSCAA Southeast Regional Poll, UNCG enter this week’s play ranked number seven.

UNCG opened the weekend with a 1-0 loss to 10th-ranked Wake Forest, but finished strong with an impressive 1-0 road victory over Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg.  Senior Amy Carnell scored her first goal of the season as she headed in the game-winning goal on a cross from Nicollette DeLaine.  The goal was Carnell’s 30th of her career, lifting her in sole possession of fifth place on the school’s all-time goals scored list.

The Spartans return to the soccer field Wednesday evening when UNCG opens Southern Conference play with a trip to Cullowhee, NC, to take on Western Carolina at 7pm.  The Spartans own a 7-2 all-time record against Western Carolina and won last year’s regular season meeting 2-1 before downing the Catamounts 7-0 in the SoCon Tournament.
