GREENSBORO, NC – Senior defender Tyson Davis netted her first career goal to give UNC Greensboro a 1-0 overtime victory over James Madison. The Spartans have won their last two games and have improved their overall record to 3-2.
An offensive struggle in the first half, James Madison and UNCG managed but four shots on goal combined in the first 45 minutes of play. Senior Nicollette DeLaine produced the lone shot for the Spartans in the first stanza.
Much the same story in the second period, the Spartans and Dukes managed only seven total shots on goal. Despite owning a 5-2 shot advantage in the second half, the game remained deadlocked at zero and UNCG took part in its fourth overtime game of the season.
With less than three minutes remaining in the first overtime session, Davis received a pass from Deven Beachum and fired a 25-yard shot that trickled off a JMU defender and into the back of the Dukes’ goal.
In goal, senior keeper Jennifer Stillman recorded her second straight shutout of the season following the 1-0 blanking of the Dukes.
“I knew it was going to be a tough game,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “JMU is an NCAA Tournament team that is very good and well coached and I knew it was going to be a one goal game. Our team really came with a good mentality tonight and there was a lot of excellent contributions from the back.”
UNCG returns to action next Friday when the Spartans welcome in-state and ACC foe Wake Forest to the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Game time between the Spartans and ninth-ranked Demon Deacons is scheduled for 7 pm.
