GREENSBORO, NC – Dacia Beachum scored 3:42 into overtime to give the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Oregon State at the UNCG Soccer Classic on Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.  The wins marks the sixth consecutive season the Spartans have won their season home opener. 

Beachum headed in a cross from classmate Nicollette DeLaine with 6:18 remaining in the first overtime, sending the Spartans to their first victory of the 2005 season.

After a scoreless first half, UNCG (1-1) nearly broke through in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Sophomore Karla Davis popped in a long ball from 40-yards out, forcing OSU (2-1) keeper Melissa Onstad to come up with a leaping save.

Nine minutes into the second half, Beachum had a good look from 15-yards out in front of the net, but Onstad was once again up to the task.

Jodie Taylor had a chance to give the Beavers a lead in the 70th minute, when she one-timed a shot from 15-yards out, but UNCG keeper Katherine Ryan gathered in the save.

Taylor struck again just over two minutes later, drilling a shot off the left post from 20-yards out. She gathered the ricochet and blasted another shot on net, which Ryan saved with a dive to her left.

UNCG sophomore Mary Kate Towne had a chance with just over a minute remaining in regulation when she connected from 20-yards out, but Onstad lunged to her right to make the save, sending the game into overtime.

Ryan came up with four saves for UNCG, while Onstad had eight saves for the Beavers. The Spartans held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while OSU held a decisive 9-4 lead in corner kicks.

UNCG will take on Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm in the final day of the UNCG Soccer Classic. Richmond and Oregon State precedes that game with a 1 pm matchup.
