Spartans drop 1-0 contest to Texas in final match of preseason
GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team put the finishing touches on its preseason schedule as the Spartans dropped a 1-0 contest to No. 27 Texas in front of just over 300 fans at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening.
The match pitted former Spartan standout and current Texas head coach Chris Petrucelli against UNCG head coach Eddie Radwanski. The two were teammates for UNCG during the early 1980s, winning a pair of Division III national championships in 1982 and 1983.
An offensive struggle for much of the first half, the Spartans nearly cracked the scoreboard with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. Despite managing only two shots in the first stanza, senior Nicollette DeLaine just missed giving the Spartans the early one goal advantage. After corralling a loose ball in the box following an errant clear by the Longhorn defense, the Raleigh, NC, native sent an off balance shot on goal, only to have UT keeper Dianna Pfenninger deflect the ball outside the path of the goal.
UNCG was outshot 8-2 in the first half, but the score remained 0-0 at the half due largely in part to Spartan keeper Jennifer Stillman’s six saves.
Midway through the second half, Texas struck for the lone goal of the contest when freshman Erin Davis netted a goal in the game’s 55th minute. The recipient of a cross from the right side, Davis collected the deflected ball and sent a chip shot over the hands of the outstretched Stillman.
UNCG returns to action next Friday evening when the Spartans travel to Durham to take on the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in the season’s opening game. Game time is schedule for 7 p.m. on the Duke campus.
