GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team opens the spring portion of the 2012-13 season this weekend as the Spartans take part in the inaugural Florida State Match-Up event at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The three-day event will have 18-holes played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the 54-hole total with live scoring available via Golfstat.
The FSU Match-Up Tournament is a 54-hole event that features 12 teams in a unique format that is believed to be the first one of its kind in NCAA Women's Golf. The twelve teams will tee off in twosomes for the first two rounds and then in a final round shotgun in threesomes. The twosomes will consist of the partner teams playing together and will see Florida State & Texas A&M, Oklahoma & Georgia, Notre Dame & Michigan, Tennessee & Texas San Antonio, Furman & Kansas, and UNCW & UNCG team up for the 2013 edition of the event.
The Match-Up champion will be determined by taking the best four scores from the partners (which is a total of ten players) and the worst score to make the Match-Up team total. At the end of the tournament, the teams with the lowest score.
The Spartans are led by sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan), the reigning Southern Conference Player and Freshman of the Year. Cnops led the SoCon in the fall with a 72.50 stroke average, including a second place finish in the Cardinal Cup in Louisville.
Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) posted a 15th place finish in the fall at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate and was second on the team with a 76.91 stroke average in the fall. Also playing this weekend for the Spartans is freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton), sophomore Andrea Rangel (Bogota, Columbia/Colegio la Presentacion) and senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook).
