Women's Golf Concludes Play At Starmount Forest Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf program concluded play at its annual fall tournament Tuesday as 16 teams played the third round of the 2012 Starmount Forest Tournament at the Starmount Forest Country Club. The Spartans finished the tournament in 14th place after the 54-hole stroke play event with a team score of 950 (331-308-311).

East Tennessee State won the tournament by an impressive 24 strokes as the Buccaneers fired an even-par 852 (287-283-282). ETSU had four players finish in the top six of the tournament in Sian Evans (2), Gabriella Wahl (4), Chloe Garner (5) and Lourdes Lopez (6). Defending Starmount champion Maryland finished second with a three-round score of 876 (287-291-298), led by Juliet Vongphoumy finished third with a 213 (71-69-73).
 
East Carolina's Frida Gustafsson Spang won the individual title with a 7-under par 206 as she shot a tournament-low 66 in round one before posting back-to-back 1-under pars in the final two rounds.
 
UNCG was paced by senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C/Ashbrook) who finished in a tie for 40th place with a 229 (80-73-76). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) placed 49th in the event with a score of 232 (81-75-76). The Spartans were playing without sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) who missed the tournament due to her play in the 2012 World Team Championships where she placed 12th overall for Belgium.
 
The Spartans return to action next week as they travel to Greenville, N.C., for the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the Greenville Country Club.
