Fanny Cnops Finishes Second At Cardinal Cup

FINAL RESULTS (PDF)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore golfer Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) posted the best 18-hole score of the 2012 Cardinal Cup, firing a 4-under 68 in round three Tuesday afternoon to move up four spots finishing in second place individually. Cnops recorded a 54-hole total of 2-under par 214 (73-73-68) to finish the tournament five shots behind Louisville's Emily Haas, who tallied a 7-under 209 (69-69-71) as the only two players under par for the event.

"Conditions were tough today and it is very impressive that Fanny was able to shoot a 68 in the windy conditions," head coach Sarah Sargent said. "She hung in there in less than ideal conditions and battled all round long. Turning in a round with four birdies and having no bogeys, is a great round today."

Cnops turned in the score of 68 with four birdies Tuesday afternoon, while posting 14 pars for her second-lowest score of her career. She tied the school-record for a single round, shooting a 5-under 67 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate (Oct. 24). The second place finish marks the fifth time in her young career she has posted a top-two finish winning the Palmetto Intercollegiate and Kiawah Island Intercollegiate last year while placing second at the Bryan National Collegiate and the Southern Conference championship.

Cnops' efforts helped the Spartans finish the tournament in eighth place overall with a three-round total of 916 (291-317-308). Host Louisville won the team portion of the tournament with an 896 (294-297-305) while Missouri finished second with an 897 (291-308-298).

Senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C/Ashbrook) finished tied for 33rd with a three-round total of 230 (74-77-79). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) posted a 234 (72-82-80) to place 45th in the event. Freshman Samantha Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) added a score of 242 (72-89-81) while classmate Lily Crane (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) turned in a 253 (83-85-85).

The Spartans will return to Greensboro for their third tournament of the year Oct. 1-2 as they host the annual Starmount Forest Tournament at Starmount Forest Country Club. The 54-hole event will begin with a 36-hole day one Oct. 1 before concluding Oct. 2 with the third round.
