INDIANAPOLIS – UNCG women's golfer Fanny Cnops has been selected by the NCAA Women's Golf Committee to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals on May 10-12.
The Spartan freshman will compete in the East Regional, hosted by Penn State. The event will be played on The Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. Twenty-four teams and six individuals were selected to participate in the regional.
Cnops is one of 378 participants that have been selected for three separate regional competitions. Of these players, 126 will advance to the NCAA Championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
The championships final will be held May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., hosted by Vanderbilt.
Cnops' rookie campaign featured eight top-10 performances, including individual titles at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate and runner-up finishes at the prestigious Bryan National Collegiate and the Southern Conference Championships, where she was named SoCon Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
The Gent, Belgium, native is UNCG's first regional qualifier since 2003, when Jenny Gleason was selected to compete as an individual.
"Fanny is one of the best players in the country and this is a reward for all of her hard work this season," UNCG coach Emily Marron said. "She has a legitimate chance to contend, and I know she is excited about the opportunity to compete against the best players in the nation. We couldn't be happier for her."
