Women’s golf tied for eighth after first round at JMU Invitational

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – UNCG women's golf team fired an opening round 304 and is tied for eighth with two rounds remaining at the 18-team JMU Invitational, which opened play Friday at Eagle Landing Golf Club.

The Spartans are tied with East Tennessee State, Western Carolina and Old Dominion, and trail team leader South Florida (287) by 17 strokes. Campbell's Kaylin Yost is the individual leader after opening with a 5-under par 67.

Freshman Fanny Cnops led the Spartans on Friday by shooting 2-over par 74. Starting play on the 10th hole, Cnops went bogey-double bogey-bogey on holes 15-17, but finished strong with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to get to 2-over. She is tied with 14 players for 11th overall.

UNCG's Ana Lucia Martinez opened tourney play with a 75, and is tied for 26th. Courtney Taylor shot 76 and is tied for 37th.

Berglind Bjornsdottir and Begona Sarabia each shot 79 and are tied for 63rd.

Kelly Berry, playing as an individual for the Spartans, is tied for 94th after carding an 85.

Saturday's second round begins with tee times starting at 8 a.m.
