Spartans off to strong start at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – UNCG women's golf team is tied for fourth after firing an opening-round 307 at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which opened play Sunday at Cougar Point.
Playing in their first tournament of the spring, the Spartans trail overall team leader Augusta State (286) by 21 strokes in the 33-team field. The Spartans are tied with Jacksonville State, and also follow Elon (303) and Campbell (306) in the standings.
Freshman Fanny Cnops leads the Spartans through the first 18 holes, shooting even par 72 on Sunday, which has her tied for fourth with two rounds remaining. Cnops enjoyed two birdies, and had just two bogeys, including one on the par-4 18th.
Augusta State's Natalie Willie leads the tournament after shooting 3-under par 69.
UNCG's Courtney Taylor and Begona Sarabia are tied for 29th after shooting 77, while Ana Lucia Martinez is tied for 93rd with an 81. Berglind Bjornsdottir shot 82 and is tied for 109th.
Second-round action begins Monday at 8:30 a.m., when UNCG will play the Oak Point course.
