GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG shot an opening-round 304 and is tied for second at the Starmount Fall Classic, which began play on Sunday at Starmount Forest Country Club.
The Spartans are tied with East Tennessee State and trail Maryland (303) by one stroke in the 14-team event. Furman (306) and Georgia State (307) round out the top five teams, while James Madison (311), Campbell (313), Winthrop (316), Western Carolina (318) and Elon (320) complete the team top 10.
Furman's Alexa Rancourt (71) leads all individuals at even par and was the only player to shoot par or better on a windy day which saw gusts reach 30 mph.
UNCG's Fanny Cnops is tied for second with two others at 1-over par 72, one stroke behind Rancourt. Cnops struggled at the outset, playing the first seven holes in 3-over par. But the freshman settled down and shot 2-under over the final 11 holes to get within a stroke of the lead.
Spartan teammates Begona Sarabia and Courtney Taylor are tied for 15th after shooting 6-over par 77.
Berglind Bjornsdottir is tied for 25th at 78, and Ana Lucia Martinez is tied for 32nd at 79.
Tournament play continues tomorrow when the second round tees off at 8:30 a.m. The tournament is free and the public are invited to attend.
