Women’s Golf continues play at Great Smokies Intercollegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C.—UNCG women's golf team continues its fall schedule at Western Carolina's 13th Annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate, Sept. 19-20 at Waynesville Inn, Golf Resort & Spa in Waynesville, N.C.

Head coach Emily Marron and the Spartans are coming off a strong season-opening performance last week at the 22-team Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., a tournament which featured nine teams ranked in the Golfstat.com final 2011 top 25. The Spartans finished 19th overall and ahead of Wisconsin, which ranked 48th in the final 2011 rankings.

Freshman Fanny Cnops tied a school record with a 216 in Charleston, tying for 19th overall in her first collegiate tournament.

UNCG Notes: The Spartans will be looking to improve on their 19th-place finish at last week's 22-team Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., a tournament which featured nine teams ranked in the Golfstat.com final 2011 Top 25 … the Spartans finished ahead of Wisconsin, which ranked 48th in the final 2011 rankings … freshman Fanny Cnops tied a school record with a 216 in Charleston, tying for 19th overall in her first collegiate tournament … Cnops recorded a 69 in the second round, and scored a double-eagle on the 15th hole during the third round … UNCG's 298 in the third round was its best single-round score since early in the 2009-10 fall season … senior Begona Sarabia tied her career best by shooting a 73 during the third round.

Tournament Notes: This is UNCG's first appearance in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate … Southern Conference foes Appalachian State, The Citadel and WCU are in the field … Western Carolina has won seven of the 12 previous team titles all-time, including two-straight … the only other past tournament champion in this year's field is Tennessee Tech, two-time winners in both 1999 and 2000 … seventeen schools are making return trips to the mountains of Western North Carolina in this year's field while five schools – UNCG, Louisiana-Monroe, Newberry, Northwood and Rollins – are making their first-ever trips to Waynesville for the tournament.
