Spartans enjoy solid start at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNCG women's golf team opened its 2011-12 season by shooting 305 during the opening round of the Cougar Classic on Sunday at Yeamans Hall Club. The Spartans are tied for 15th among the 22-team field in the overall standings.

LSU owns the overall team lead after shooting 8-under par 280. Rounding out the top five teams are Florida (284), North Carolina (285) NC State (287) and Alabama (287).

Tennessee's Erica Popson (-6) owns the individual lead.

Freshman Fanny Cnops led the Spartans and is tied for 47th after shooting 3-over par 75. Cnops was even after the first nine holes, but shot 3-over on the back nine. She had one birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Junior Courtney Taylor is tied for 59th at 4-over 76, while freshman Berglind Bjornsdottir and senior Ana Lucia Martinez are tied for 70th at 5-over par 77. Senior Begona Sarabia is tied for 84th after shooting a 78.
