UNCG closes out play at Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Courtney Taylor carded a final round 73 to record UNCG's best score of the day as the Spartans finished 15th at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans shot a final round 302 to finish the tournament at 923. Tournament host Tennessee, which opened the day with a 20-shot lead, maintained its 20-shot advantage to win the tournament. Arkansas finished second, with Kent State third and Mississippi fourth.
Erica Popson won the individual title in a sudden-death playoff. She led for the first two rounds, but was caught on the final day by Mississippi's Natalie Gleadall's round of 69 that forced a playoff. Popson sank a 15-foot birdie putt, however, on the first playoff hole to claim the title. Gleadall and Popson set a new tournament record, shooting 207 for the tournament.
Ana Martinez wound up UNCG's top finisher in 36th place. She shot a final round 76 to finish at 223.
UNCG returns to action on Oct. 22 when it begins action at its final tournament of the fall slate. The Spartans will play in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. to close out the fall schedule.
