GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's Courtney Taylor and Ana Martinez both carded rounds of 75 on Friday to lead the way for the Spartans on the opening round of play at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship.
Tournament host Tennessee shot a tournament record 280 to hold an 11-shot lead over Mississippi and Arkansas. The Lady Vols eclipsed the record of 281 set by LSU two years ago.
UNCG is in 15th after the opening round, shooting 312. Starting on No. 10, Taylor played the back side of the course in 37 and the front in 38, carding two birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey along with 12 pars. Martinez closed her round out with 11 consecutive pars after a birdie, two bogeys and a double- bogey early on in her day.
The Spartans will begin Saturday's second round on the No. 10 tee and get underway with the 9 a.m. group.
