GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro senior women's golfer Sofia Aidemark will be among those students inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society in ceremonies next Tuesday on the UNCG campus.
Aidemark, a senior from Laholm, Sweden, will be inducted during ceremonies at the Witherspoon Auditorium on Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m., just hours after the Spartans compete in the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship in Hilton Head, S.C.
With a 3.97 GPA in communications entering the spring semester, Aidemark has made the Dean's List each of the last three semesters and six out of possible seven. She has also made the Chancellor's List all five semesters she was eligible for it. She was named to the NGCA All-America Scholar team last spring, as well as a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine At-Large Academic All-District honor. She was also an Academic All-Southern Conference selection. She has been an AD honor roll student all seven semesters thus far
"I am very excited and happy about my Phi Beta Kappa award. It is always nice to be recognized for all the hard work, especially as an international student-athelete. Receiving this award just before graduation is definitely something special to me and to my family, who will be here to watch me graduate."
The Phi Beta Kappa society is the oldest honor society in the United States for undergraduates in the liberal arts and sciences. Established in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, the Society has played an important part in the intellectual history of the nation for more than 200 years, and has counted among its members leading scholars, justices of the Supreme Court, business leaders and others. The Society publishes an academic journal, The American Scholar, which takes its name from the address delivered by Ralph Waldo Emerson to the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Harvard University on August 31, 1837.
The North Carolina Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was established at UNCG early in 1934.
"I am so proud of Sofia for being awarded Phi Betta Kappa," said UNCG women's golf coach Emily Marron. "She has worked very hard on her academics during her time here at UNCG, and I admire her dedication in the classroom. Sofia exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete, and we are all very proud of her."
Aidemark is the first student-athlete at UNCG to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa since women's basketball student-athlete Jasmine Dixon in 2008.
