Strong second round lifts UNCG to eighth after two rounds at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. - UNC Greensboro carded a 299 in the afternoon round to sit in eighth place after 36 holes at the Pinehurst Challenge women's golf tournament hosted by College of Charleston on Pinehurst No. 6.

The Spartans were 10th after the morning round, shooting 306 in the first 18 holes. They bounced back to shoot a 299 in the second round to slide up to eighth place in the 18-team field entering Tuesday's final round.

Florida State is in control atop the team standings, sitting at 577 and holding an 18-shot lead over Campbell and Maryland. North Carolina State and James Madison are tied for fourth at 598, followed by Minnesota and East Tennessee State tied for sixth at 599, then UNCG at 605.

Sofia Aidemark is UNCG's top individual golfer, sitting in 20th place after rounds of 76 and 74. Annelie Weimenhog had the team's best round of the day, bouncing back from a tough morning round to card a 73 in the afternoon round.

Maryland's Christine Shimel leads the individual standings, sitting at five-under par 139. Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins and Florida State's Lacey Agnew are tied for second at 142.

Tuesday's final round will be a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m.
