HOLLYWOOD, S.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Ashley Mylton shot a 75 in Monday’s second round to stay in contention, four shots back of the lead at the 2008 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at the Links at Stono Ferry.
Mylton is tied for third, four shots back of leader Jaclyn Hilea of Furman. Hilea carded one of the only two sub-par rounds of the day on Monday, shooting a 71 to gain the 36-hole lead. Mylton, a senior from Charlotte, NC, had a solid day on Monday with one exception – a triple-bogey on No. 9. She was even-up the rest of the day with two birdies and two bogeys.
As a team, UNCG has a solid hold on second place. The Spartans are six shots behind tournament leader Furman and 12 shots ahead of third place Elon entering Tuesday’s final round. The Spartans had closed on Furman, but saw the Lady Paladins gain in their margin over the last three holes. UNCG’s four scoring golfers combined to play Nos. 16, 17 and 18 at nine-over par, while Furman’s four scorers were just four-over to turn a one-shot advantage into six.
Annelie Weimenhog and Erica Creed are also sitting in the Top 10 individually. Both are in contention for all-conference honors being part of a tie for seventh at 152, eight shots off the pace.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with tee times beginning at 8 am. UNCG players will begin with the 9:40 am group, capped off by Mylton in the day’s final pairing at 10:20 am.
