Mylton shoots 69 to lead Spartans to a 13th place finish at Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. – Junior Ashley Mylton fired a career-low three-under-par 69 to tie for the second lowest round on Tuesday and lead the UNC Greensboro women’s golf team to a 13th place finish among a competitive field of 18 teams at the 2006 Cougar Classic which was played at the par 72, 6,092 yard Yeamans Hall Club and hosted by College of Charleston.
UNCG shot a two-day, 54-hole total of 920 for the eighth-lowest 54-hole tournament team score in school history. The Spartans fired a 303 on Tuesday to move up one place after entering the morning round in a tie for 13th.
Mylton, the Charlotte, NC native, became just the sixth person in school history to shoot a round in the 60’s. She also recorded the lowest round by a UNCG golfer since Polly Willett carded a 68 at the 2004 Southern Conference Championship.
She had seven birdies in her round, including four in a stretch of six holes that saw her get to -5 on the day. However, she gave back two strokes on consecutive bogies, before rallying with a birdie on her final hole, the par-3 13th.
Mylton finished in a tie for 36th with a 10-over 226 for the tournament after beginning the day way back in the field in a tie for 65th.
Junior Gabby Dimora wound up in a tie for 43rd after shooting a 78 on Tuesday. She began the day tied for 35th after firing rounds of 77 and a one-over 73 on day one of the tournament.
UNC’s Lauren Hunt held of a late charge by Florida State’s Caroline Westrup to earn medalist honors. Hunt shot a six-under-par 210 (69-71-70) to edge Westrup by two strokes. After starting the day six shots behind Hunt, Westrup nearly lapped the field with a six-under 66 on Tuesday to garner a runner-up finish.
Westrup’s individual effort did, however, give the Seminoles the team title, beating out the Tar Heels by one stroke, 873 to 874. The defending champion Tennessee Lady Vols took third (876), while LSU and Alabama rounded out the top-five.
UNCG heads north to take part in the Lady Lion Invitational hosted by Penn State University in State College, PA. The Invite runs September 22-24 at the PSU Blue Course. UNCG head coach Emily Marron is a PSU grad.
