Mylton falls in first round of U.S Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship

LEXINGTON, KY – UNC Greensboro’s Ashley Mylton fell in the first round of match play action at the U.S Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Kearney Hill Golf Links on Wednesday.

The rising senior fell to Kayla Mortellaro of Phoenix, AZ, who advanced with a 144 in qualifying, five and four in the first round of the USGA championship.

Mylton advanced to match play after carding a 77 and a 74 for a 151 in the first two rounds of stroke play qualifying. She was one 64 players who made the match-play cut off at 9-over 153.

The senior qualified for the championships by shooting a 72 at the sectional qualifier held at the University of North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course last month. Mylton birdied the fifth sudden death playoff hole to become one of six qualifiers at the sectional.

Mylton was UNCG’s top golfer for most of the 2006-07 season. She played in all 10 tournaments and recorded five Top 20 finishes, including a season-best tie for 10th place at the Lady Pirate Invitational in October. She helped the Spartans to a fourth place finish at the Southern Conference championships and finished in 14th place individually.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship began in 1977 at Yahara Hills Golf Course in Madison, WI. The WAPL is open to female golfers who have been bona fide public-course players since Jan. 1 of the current championship year. The competition is open to any bona fide public-course player whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 18.4. The WAPL is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

Second round matches are scheduled for Thursday with the 36-hole final scheduled for Saturday.
