Saturday action at SoCon Women's Golf Championship cancelled; tourney shortened

MEBANE, N.C. – Intermittent thunderstorms have cancelled Saturday's play at the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Mill Creek Golf Club. Play will resume Sunday morning as a 36-hole event.

Just over a half-inch of rain was reported in Mebane as a result of the thunderstorms, making the course unplayable and forcing tournament officials to shorten the event to 36 holes. It is just the second time in the 14-year history of the championship that the event has been shortened to 36 holes due to weather problems. The 2001 event, held in Boone, NC, was the only other SoCon Women's Golf Championship to be cut short by weather.

On Friday, UNCG's Ashley Mylton shot even-par 72 to place herself third and help UNC Greensboro to third place in the team standings after the first round.

Mylton, a sophomore from Charlotte, NC, sits two shots off the pace. College of Charleston’s Angie Hill fired an opening round 70 to take the early lead, followed by Western Carolina’s Bianca Melone who is second at one-under par.

UNCG has three other golfers in the Top 10. Lacy Miller is tied for sixth after shooting an opening round 75, while Ashley Parrott and Gabby Dimora each shot 76 on Friday to sit in a tie for 10th place.

College of Charleston leads the team standings with an opening round score of 294. Western Carolina is second, one shot back, followed by UNCG at 299, five shots off of the pace. Furman is a distant fourth at 308.

The final round gets underway weather permitting at 8 am Sunday. UNCG golfers are slated to begin at 9:20, with Mylton teeing it up in the final pairing at 9:52 am.
