Storylines
• UNCG wraps up its three-game Southern Conference road trip when it takes on Samford in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. The Spartans are looking for the season sweep after topping the Bulldogs in Greensboro in December.
• The Spartans fell 63-44 at Chattanooga on Saturday. Breonna Patterson scored 10 points for UNCG, all in the first half, while Sarah Folwell had a season-high nine, all in the second half. Janae' Stevenson also added nine points. Freshman Jarae Savage pulled down eight rebounds, leading the squad in that category for the fourth straight game.
• UNCG went 5-for-7 from 3-point range against the Lady Mocs, matching its season high for makes in a game and setting a new high-water mark for 3-point field goal percentage this season (.714). Patterson was 2-for-2 from 3-point range and Folwell was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, matching her career high with three makes.
• Patterson leads UNCG in scoring with 10.5 points per game and has hit at least one 3-pointer in a career-best six straight games. Savage's recent surge has lifted her into the team rebounding lead at 5.7 per contest. Stevenson is second in both categories at 8.5 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. Dayshaun Richbow leads the team with 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
• Samford leads the series with UNCG, 5-3. The teams met for the first time in 2008-09, the Bulldogs' first season in the SoCon, and split in the regular season in each of the first two years of the series, with Samford taking a neutral-court victory in the SoCon tournament in 2009. The Bulldogs won both meetings last season, but UNCG is guaranteed no worse than a split this season after winning the first meeting on Dec. 3, 61-53. Samford is 3-0 against the Spartans in Birmingham.
• In this season's first meeting, Natalie Headley scored a career-high 18 points and Savage and Richbow added 12 each as UNCG downed the defending Southern Conference tournament champions on the day the Spartans dedicated Lynne Agee Court and honored their former coach. Paige Anderson led Samford with 13 points, while Taylor Reece had 12 to go with a team-best six rebounds.
• Last season's contest against Samford in Birmingham was a bit out of the ordinary. The game, originally scheduled for Jan. 10, 2011, was delayed a day by a massive snow storm that blanketed Birmingham and much of the South. After playing the game in a nearly empty arena a day later than scheduled, the Spartans were unable to make it home in one night due to poor road conditions, stretching the trip out another additional day. Samford took a 66-46 win in the only contest in the series UNCG has lost by more than nine points.
• Samford is 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the SoCon. After stumbling to an 0-2 start in league play with losses at UNCG and Elon, the Bulldogs have recovered to win seven of their nine SoCon games since, with the lone losses coming to SoCon leaders Chattanooga and Appalachian State. Samford is one of just two league teams to knock off Davidson this season, doing so on the road on Jan. 21.
• The Bulldogs downed Elon 67-53 on Saturday, getting 19 points and 10 rebounds from Hannah Dawson for the junior forward's first career double-double. Anderson had an efficient 22 points, going 5-for-6 from 3-point range and 7-for-8 from the free throw line, while Jazmine Powers gave the Bulldogs three in double figures with 10 points.
• Anderson is the only Samford player averaging double figures on the season at 13.5 points per game. Dawson leads the squad with 4.5 rebounds per game and Powers leads the team with 3.3 assists per game and 1.8 steals per game.
• Samford has been remarkably consistently with its starting lineup, with Anderson, Dawson and Ruth Ketcham starting all 20 games and Reece and Powers starting 19 each.
• Samford is in the top 50 nationally in several categories: field goal percentage (34th, 42.6), free throw percentage (34th, 74.5), 3-point field goals (21st, 7.1 per game), 3-point field goal percentage (13th, 36.5) and turnovers per game (30th, 15.0 per game). Anderson is 28th nationally in free throw percentage at 86.2 percent.
