SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG's women's basketball team was picked eighth in the Southern Conference's preseason media poll, the league office announced Friday.
Just like in the preseason coaches poll, Chattanooga was picked to win the league, grabbing 12 first-place votes and 228 total points to edge defending regular-season champion Appalachian State, which had eight first-place votes and 221 total points.
Defending SoCon tournament champion Samford had 191 points and a first-place vote to come in third, while Elon had 170 points for fourth. Fifth-place Furman had 133 points and the remaining first-place vote, while Davidson was a point behind in sixth place. Georgia Southern was picked seventh with 110 points, followed by UNCG (95 points), College of Charleston (78), Western Carolina (63) and Wofford (31).
The Spartans tied for fifth in the league last season with a 10-10 conference mark and went 13-16 overall.
The SoCon opens the women's basketball season with 10 teams in action on Friday, Nov. 11. UNCG will be one of them, as it hosts Liberty at Fleming Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
