Storylines
• UNCG heads to Boone, N.C., to tangle with Southern Conference regular-season champion Appalachian State in the final regular-season contest for both teams Saturday. The Spartans will try to improve on their seed for the upcoming SoCon Championship.
• The Spartans can finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in the SoCon standings. Should UNCG beat App State and Elon fall at College of Charleston, the Spartans would be the No. 4 seed at the tournament. Should UNCG and Elon both win, UNCG would be the fifth seed. If the Spartans lose to the Mountaineers, they will be the sixth seed.
• UNCG brings a 13-14 overall record and a 10-9 mark into Saturday's contest. The Spartans are looking for their first non-losing season since the 2006-07 campaign, when they went 20-10. UNCG has not had a winning record in league play since that season, either. The Spartans were 13-5 in SoCon play that year.
• Saturday's contest is the last in a brutal run for the Spartans against the top teams in the league. In addition to facing league-leading App State on Saturday, UNCG took on No. 2 Samford on Monday and No. 3 Chattanooga on Feb. 19.
• The Spartans fell to Samford 59-52 in their last contest, squandering a 17-point first-half lead. UNCG jumped out to a 22-5 lead in the contest but then went stone cold from the field, watching the Bulldogs end the first half on a 19-4 run to make it a two-point game at the break. Samford finally grabbed the lead in the second half and the teams traded it for most of the frame before the Bulldogs went ahead to stay with about 4 minutes left. Janae' Stevenson had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Spartans, both career highs.
• Stevenson has been a beast on the boards lately for the Spartans, pulling down 15 rebounds in three of her last four games to take over the team rebounding lead.
• Monique Floyd, a senior guard, scored her 1,000th career point in UNCG's loss at Furman on Jan. 31. With nine rebounds Monday against Samford, she became the only player in UNCG history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 175 steals and 250 assists at the Division I level. She currently has 1,085 points, 506 rebounds, 186 steals and 278 assists.
• UNCG holds a slight edge in the series with Appalachian State, 28-26. The Apps have won three straight in the series and are looking for the season sweep for the second straight year.
• In this season's first meeting, Amanda Leigh scored what was then a season-high 26 points and Floyd added 20, but Appalachian State outscored UNCG 60-14 in the paint and fended off a late Spartan charge to take an 83-72 on Jan. 22. The Spartans had two players with 20 points for the first time in nearly six years. The Mountaineers were led by Sam Ramirez's 20 points, while Ashlen Dewart had 19, Anna Freeman 17 and Kelsey Sharkey 11. Freeman just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.
• Floyd leads UNCG in scoring with 13.8 points per game, while freshman Janae' Stevenson leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 per game and blocks a team-best 1.3 shots per game. Leigh is UNCG's second-leading scorer at 11.8 points per game, while Dayshaun Richbow leads the team with 3.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
• Several Spartans are making moves in the UNCG record book. Kendra Smith is 10th on the career blocked shots list with 46, while Stevenson is sixth in single-season blocked shots with 34. Floyd is ninth in school history in career steals with 186. Leigh moved into a tie for second in school history in career 3-pointers with two against Samford on Monday and now has 169 for her career.
• App State is ranked ninth in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, and had won 12 straight overall and 18 straight at home before a loss to Georgia Southern on Feb. 19.
• The Apps will be celebrating Senior Day against the Spartans on Saturday. UNCG has not won in Boone since a 66-61 victory on Jan. 13, 2007.
• Ramirez leads App in scoring with 16.3 points per game, while Dewart is just a shade behind her at 16.2. Freeman scored 14.3 points per game and leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per contest, while Dewart is again just a few boards off the pace with 6.4 per game. Freeman dishes off a team-best 4.0 assists per game, while Ramirez leads the SoCon in assist-to-turnover ratio with a 2.0 mark. Dewart leads the league with a .538 field goal percentage and Freeman grabs a league-best 3.2 steals per game.
