SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro guard Amanda Leigh has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to a pair of wins to end the regular season, the league office announced Tuesday.
Leigh, a redshirt junior, averaged 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in wins over Furman and Elon.
In UNCG's 60-49 win over Furman on Feb. 23, Leigh scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Her two 3-pointers in the contest moved her into third place on UNCG's single-season list with 58 on the season. She also had three assists to just one turnover in the game. The win snapped UNCG's 10-game losing streak.
At Elon on Saturday, the Charlotte, N.C., native exploded for 28 points and 10 rebounds, both career and game highs. The double-double was the first of her career. She hit a career-best six 3-pointers against the Phoenix, giving her 64 on the season, one shy of second place on UNCG's single-season list.
For the week, she shot 45.5 percent from the floor, including an impressive 44.4 percent from 3-point range.
Leigh becomes UNCG's first league player of the week since Monique Floyd took the honor on Feb. 24, 2009.
The Spartans enter this week's Southern Conference Women's Basketball Championship as the ninth seed and will take on No. 8 seed Western Carolina at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
