UNCG teams receive good marks in latest APR release

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro Director of Athletics Kim Record announced Wednesday that all 18 Spartan athletic teams have met satisfactory standards when the institution's Academic Progress Report (APR) scores were announced by the NCAA earlier in the day.

The scores announced Wednesday reflected the multi-year APR scores for 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

"We are pleased with the report released today by the NCAA," said Record, who has been at UNCG as director of athletics since early October. "As I said last month when our women's golf team and women's basketball team earned public recognition for their perfect multi-year scores, it isn't easy to reach the perfect score, but it is ultimately a goal that each of our sports aspire to achieve. In today's announcement, 12 of our 18 sports had perfect APR scores for 2008-09. That's a great start toward that goal."

Altogether, 12 of the 18 sports had perfect 1,000 APR scores for the 2008-09 academic year - men's cross country, men's tennis, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's indoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, and women's volleyball.

Half of UNCG's athletic teams (nine out of 18) surpassed the national average for their respective sport's APR scores - men's soccer, men's tennis, men's indoor track and field, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's indoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

Last month, the UNCG women's basketball and women's golf programs were honored by the NCAA for having perfect APR scores for the multi-year period. Those two squads were among 594 teams that had perfect scores for the four-year period. A total of 6,411 squads were scored in the Division I membership.

UNCG's women's basketball program has now had a perfect APR score for five consecutive years, one of 319 teams nationwide to receive such accolades.
