Peschel honored at Girls and Women in Sports awards dinner
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro associate head women's basketball coach Carol Peschel was recognized by the Greensboro YWCA at its annual Girls and Women in Sports awards dinner Sunday.
Peschel was honored with the organization's Empowerment Award for Coach/Teacher in Sports.
"So much of the work that we do as assistant coaches, while vital to the running of the women's basketball program, is 'behind the scenes' type work, and as such, not something you would be recognized for," Peschel said. "So for me to be chosen to receive the Empowerment Award for Coach/Teacher in Sports from an organization like the YWCA, which is outside of the university, is truly an honor and is one of the highlights of my career in coaching."
A 1982 UNCG graduate, Peschel just finished her 13th season as the Spartans' associate head coach and her 26th season at UNCG overall. Peschel works primarily with the perimeter players and has seen several student-athletes register 1,000-point careers. Off the court, she is the Spartans' recruiting coordinator and organizes UNCG's summer camp program.
UNCG has made eight postseason appearances with Peschel on its staff, including an NCAA Division III Final Four appearance in 1988. The Spartans have won 11 regular-season conference champions and four conference tournament titles during Peschel's tenure.
As a player at UNCG, Peschel became the Spartans' first female All-American in any sport in 1981-82. That season, she was part of a squad that went 25-3 overall - including a 12-0 mark in the Dixie Conference - and played in the national title game, falling 67-66 in overtime to Elizabethtown (Pa.). Peschel was also named to the Div. III All-Tournament team that season.
In 2007, Peschel and the rest of the 1981-82 team were inducted into UNCG's Athletics Hall of Fame.
"This is an award that's a long time coming for Carol," UNCG head coach Lynne Agee said. "She is very honored and humbled by the award. She is very deserving as an assistant and an associate that has worked tirelessly for years to challenge and push our student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom. She is so deserving of the recognition for the work and dedication that she has given to our student-athletes over the years. I'm very pleased for her that she was recognized with this award."
